Species ecological strategy and soil phosphorus supply interactively affect plant biomass and phosphorus concentration

چکیده
Excess soil phosphorus often constrains ecological restoration of degraded semi-natural grasslands in Western-Europe. Slow-growing species, target (measures), are at a disadvantage because they outcompeted by fast-growing species. Gaining insight into the responses plant species and communities to availability will help understanding trajectories grassland ecosystems. We set up two pot experiments using twenty with contrasting growth forms (i.e. grasses versus forbs) nutrient use strategies acquisitive conservative use). quantified strategy based on stress-tolerance value CSR framework (StrateFy et al. 2017). grew these (1) as monocultures (2) mixtures along gradient measured aboveground biomass concentrations. Plant concentration generally increased supply only communities. Forbs had higher concentrations compared both mixtures. The species’ effects tissue concentrations, depending (interaction effect) vegetation (dilution effect). Our findings contribute knowledge required for successful species-rich grasslands. results suggest that under specific conditions nitrogen limitation, no dispersal light limitation), slow-growing can survive even thrive excess availability. In field, competition may be reduced mowing or grazing management.

Does Soil Disturbance Affect Soil Phosphorus Fractions?
Increased turnover of organic matter as a result of soil disturbance (e.g. by soil tillage) is described in principle, but the direct influence of soil disturbance on soil P turnover especially for organic farming systems has not been sufficiently proven. The objective of the study was to evaluate the short term effect of soil disturbance on different soil P fractions in a soil shaking experime...
متن کاملRelationship among Phosphorus Circulation Activity, Bacterial Biomass, pH, and Mineral Concentration in Agricultural Soil
Improvement of phosphorus circulation in the soil is necessary to enhance phosphorus availability to plants. Phosphorus circulation activity is an index of soil's ability to supply soluble phosphorus from organic phosphorus in the soil solution. To understand the relationship among phosphorus circulation activity; bacterial biomass; pH; and Fe, Al, and Ca concentrations (described as mineral co...
متن کاملRelationship between phosphorus concentration in soil solution and phosphorus in shoots of barley
Phosphorus concentration in the soil solution of agricultural soils should be a consensus of the agronomic and environmental aspect. Data from literary sources are inconsistent if the method of soil solution extraction from the soil and the method of phosphorus detection are not indicated. In the present paper a simplified procedure of soil solution extraction is used that is derived from the n...
متن کاملEffects of phosphorus supply on growth, phosphate concentration and cluster-root formation in three Lupinus species.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS In some lupin species, phosphate deficiency induces cluster-root formation, which enhances P uptake by increasing root surface area and, more importantly, the release of root exudates which enhances P availability. METHODS Three species of Lupinus, L. albus, L. atlanticus and L. micranthus, with inherently different relative growth rates were cultivated under hydroponics i...
متن کاملPhosphorus limitation, soil-borne pathogens and the coexistence of plant species in hyperdiverse forests and shrublands.
Hyperdiverse forests occur in the lowland tropics, whereas the most species-rich shrublands are found in regions such as south-western Australia (kwongan) and South Africa (fynbos). Despite large differences, these ecosystems share an important characteristic: their soils are strongly weathered and phosphorus (P) is a key growth-limiting nutrient. Soil-borne pathogens are increasingly being rec...
